Garden Sleepers

The rise in the use of Garden Sleepers.

In recent years, gardening and landscaping which have traditionally included the use of re-used and reconditioned Railway Sleepers has recently changed. This is because there are now more options available that come in the form of New Treated Softwood Railway Sleepers and New Oak Railway Sleepers.

Garden Sleepers or Railway Sleepers give an outside space something different, they are unique whilst looking clean cut with an excellent level of versatility. Giving outside space character is simple with Railway Sleepers and they have a number of different uses, they suit many different types of gardens with the ability to transform the environment in which they are placed with the added advantage they are hard wearing and durable making them a long term investment that constantly delivers.

Choosing the correct type of sleeper for your garden is vital and now gardeners and landscapers now have more options available than the traditional Railway Sleepers, which are no longer the popular option because they only come in one size and they have to be handled with gloves as they are treated with creosote which can leak but it also makes them less versatile.

The new treated softwood railway sleepers offer a sleek and modern finish for any project whilst also maintaining that traditional look. They are more versatile than reclaimed timbers as they can be given a number of different finishes or they can be left bare to give a contemporary look. These are pressure treated as standard which makes them extremely durable and insect resistant, and they do not leak tar or creosotes in the way that traditional sleepers did, which means they can be used in ponds or places where they are frequently in contact with organic materials.

These sleepers come in many sizes and lengths ranging from 250mm x 125mm x 2.4m / 2.6m / 3.0m / 3.6m / 4.8m / 6.0m and 200mm x 100mm x 2.4m / 3.0m / 3.6m / 4.8m / 6.0m.

Although you will find many Timber Merchants are able to cut some sleepers to size please check with your supplier before you purchase.

Another option available is New Oak Railway Sleepers and these offer a similar level of versatility and durability as New Treated Softwood Railway Sleepers but because they are a hardwood the timber is more impact resistant and will last longer. They are more rugged looking as they are cut straight from the tree and this adds to the ‘natural’ look and feel.

They too, can come treated or untreated and because they do not contain tar or creosotes they are very usable. They also come in a number of different sizes and lengths that range from 250mm x 125mm x 2.4m, 220mm x 130mm x 2.4m, 200mm x 100mm x 2.4m, 200mm x 100mm x 2.6m so they also fit the domestic, landscaping and construction markets.

These new styles of sleepers are easier to work with as they are lighter and simple to cut and this makes them perfect for a number of uses.

For all landscaping and garden projects, Railway Sleepers are ideal for creating raised flower beds and lawn boundaries giving any garden or outside space the wow factor. The added advantage of the feel of natural organic bordering as opposed to man-made brick and mortar give any landscaping project whether large or small a more natural feel.

Due to their safety, and long term durability they can be used to create ponds and they are increasingly being used to build retaining walls because of their solid features.
