Timber Skirting & Architraves

SkirtingIn choosing the right Skirting and Architrave you need to consider the following,

1. What effect are you looking for, is the room that you are going to fix the Skirting and Architrave into modern or traditional? what period is it? ie Georgian, Edwardian or Victorian?

2. Are you looking to paint or stain the Skirting and Architrave? If you are looking to paint then more than likely an MDF profile would be the best choice, if however you are looking to stain or vanish then traditional Softwood or Hardwood Timber may be the best option.

3. Is the room that you are going to fix the Skirting and Architrave into sizeable, are the wall runs long and if so do you ideally want to fix boards that do not show a joint? If the answer to this is yes you may find that the best material to use is MDF where longer lengths are easier to buy, commonly MDF Skirting and Architraves come in 5.49m lengths. Timber Skirting boards can be purchased in these longer lengths but not so easily, especially so in some of the Hardwood species.

Softwood Skirting and Architraves

Most Softwood Skirting and Architraves will be machined from good quality Scandinavian Joinery Redwood (Vth / Unsorted, depending on the profile and size). This material is suitable for painting, varnishing and staining and is ordinarily available to purchase in lengths ranging from 2.4m - 4.8m.

Hardwood Skirting and Architrave

Although a good Timber Merchant (such as TimberClick Merchants) will be able to machine any species that you want the most common Hardwood Skirting and Architrave is Oak and in most cases this will be American White Oak. Ideal for use in conjunction with Oak Flooring and available in a variety of profiles (as listed below) and in lengths up to 3.9m / 4.2m.

MDF Skirting and Architrave

As we all know MDF is an excellent material to work with, versatile, easy to cut and machine and basically contains zero natural imperfections. It is an ideal material for 2nd fix materials such as Skirting and Architrave. Available in all common profiles as listed below and in decent longer lengths, also comes pre primed ready for painting.

Skirting and Architrave Profiles

The most common profiles available are as follows:-
