Reclaimed Railway Sleepers are quite safe to use in your garden, it is however recommended by EU directive that they are not used in areas where there may be frequent skin contact.

In particular they should not be used in childrens pay areas, for making garden / picnic furniture or indeed inside buildings.

Please remember that the creasote / tar does have a tendency to leak out, especially in warm temperatures and so TimberClick does advise that you wear gloves when handling Reclaimed Railway Sleepers.

The answer here is simply no we can not.

We are able to cut all New Railway Sleeeprs but not any of the Reclaimed ones. If you intend on cutting them yourself with a chain saw TimberClick would advise that you take particular care and ensure that you wear protective clothing such as goggles, protective trousers, boots and gloves.

This is because Reclaimed Railway Sleepers quite often have sections of steel / metal in them which are hidden to the eye. It is our overall advice that you do not cut them and use them as they are.

Reclaimed Railway Sleepers are very heavy, approximately 80Kgs or 170Lbs. TimberClick advises that you lift / move them using 2 people.

TimberClick delivers Reclaimed Railway Sleepers on a lorry with a hiab crane. Our drivers will hiab lift them onto the curb side or if possible onto your front drive / front garden.

For health and safety reasons we are unable to take them any further for you.

Quite simply the Grade 1's are the best in terms of squareness and condition.

The Grade2's are also a very good Reclaimed Railway Sleeper but will contain some defects and will not be as square and uniform as the Grade 1.

The lowest Grade that TimberClick offer is the Grade 3 which will be far more rustic, contain more splits and irregularities.

When choosing which of the 3 Grades to buy you need to decide upon the end use and the appearance that you wish to achieve.

Some expamples are as follows:~

Grade 1 - Retaining walls, raised beds, steps, curbing and edging.

Grade 2 - similar to the Grade 1.

Grade 3 - Ideal for raised beds and retaining walls where the aim is to produce a rustic effect. Particularly useful where part or all of the sleeper is hidden from the eye, ie bases for sheds, edging or curbing where part or all of the sleeper is embedded into the ground.

These fixings both come with a 'bit' that you place into the end of a power drill - this in turn fits into the fixing and allows you to drive it straight through the Railway Sleeper, no need for any pre drilling.

Please remember that if fixing the Railway Sleeper through the 150mm (6") section TimberClick advises a 200mm (8") fixing.

In the event that you are going to turn the Railway Sleepers on their side we do not supply a fixing that is long enough as would need to be 300mm (12") - in this case TimberClick would recommend that you fix the Railway Sleepers against an internal post, either 75mm (3") or 100mm (4") and use 100mm (4") or 150mm (6") fixings.

Yes, New Oak Railway Sleepers do not contain any kind of treatment.

No, New Oak Railway Sleepers are extremely durable. They will stand the test of time for well over 25 years.

No, once the Oak has been subjected to the elements it will turn a natural grey colour. If you wanted to apply a stain coating every 2 or 3 years you may do so but many people do actually prefer the natural grey weathered effect.

No, at TimberClick we stock only one grade which is in effect the very best that money can buy. Whilst New Oak sleepers are generally square with little or no defect please do always bare in mind that they are Railway Sleepers and as such may contain some wane and splits.

Yes, New Oak Railway Sleepers are ideal for this provided that you are looking for a rustic end look. New Oak Railway Sleepers will split and shake over time, especially so if placed in varying temperatures. If you are looking to make furniture that is free from this then you need to purchase higher quality Kiln Dried material - this is something that TimberClick can also supply.

Modern pressure treatments are water based and exclude arsenic and chromium and are therefore non toxic.

The treatment is quite safe and allows New Softwood Treated Railway Sleepers to be used in those areas that Reclaimed ones are not suitable for.

TimberClick would however recommend that any cut ends are retreated with a preservative stain.
