Decking Materials List

Decking Materials List / Deck Materials List

When it comes to constructing decking, there are many different materials that you will need. It can be difficult getting everything together if you are not completely sure what you need, with this in mind, here is a handy list that you can use when ordering your decking materials.

Before ordering materials, consider the following:

  • How big is the area to be decked?
Take into account any decking material you might be using for decking and steps and also factor in 10% extra for wastage. The gaps between decking boards also is a consideration, with standard decking spacers being 10mm thick.
  • How high is the intended decking area?
This will influence the lengths of framing timber required to build the supporting structure.
  • Is the decking freestanding or going to be attached to an existing buildig?
Wall plate timber would be needed for attachment to an existing structure and anchor bolts will be required. Freestanding decks will require more bracing timber to prevent it from moving when people are using it.
  • Hardwood or softwood timber decking?
Hardwood decking is longer lasting but more expensive, where as pressure treated softwoods are easier to cut, drill and join.
  • Fixings
Timberlok screws will drive through both hardwood and softwood decking timber without a pilot hole (but pilot hole will make it easier) and you will need a powerful drill.

When it comes to creating your decking material list, you may need to adjust a few things (the height of the posts, for example) depending on your deck. You should also have at least one other person on-hand to help you hold, carry, and lift items. It’s much easier to build your deck if you have several other people helping you.
